Tweak your Aspire One (Linux) Part 1

Acer's Aspire One (Linux), as AO in short for convenience, uses Linpus Lite as its operating system, this customized Linux distribution has many easy-to-use features, thus even for those who haven't used Linux before it's still very easy to handle the daily jobs. However, many functions aren't accessible to user by default, such as the advanced-mode desktop, etc., or many changes you made will be restored to default setting after reboot. Some people probably want it to do more things than it could in the first place. Here I'm going to list some useful tips that I found in the Internet that could help you to get more control on your AO.

First of all, you should unleash the desktop menu as the start because you're able to access more options then. You might have noticed that nothing happens while you click the right button of mouse on the desktop. And you probably searched the setting menu again and again, but you just couldn't find any option to change that. It's simple actually, you just have to do the following things:

  1. Press Alt + F2 and type terminal to call the Terminal
  2. Type xfce-setting-show and press enter.
  3. Click on Desktop and choose the Behaviour tab. Mark the Show desktop menu on right click option and close the window.

Now you can call desktop menu on right click, there are lots of applications and many options to control the system setting. For example, you can add/remove software by simply choose them from the list and let it do the remaining jobs, just as other Linux distributions like Fedora or Ubuntu. Otherwise, you have to use yum in Terminal to get free software installed from the Internet directly, or download the package (in form of tar or rpm) and install it by yourself. With the desktop menu, at least you can do many things as the normal Linux distribution from the GUI directly. This is very helpful for average users who aren't that familiar with Linux.

If you have any question about AO, you may find the answers and help on AspireOneUser.com.
